Last week I found Gibson Guitar in one of Guitar Store. At the back of its headstock, there is impressed "Serial Number 90726014 Made in USA" Is this guitar original and truly made in USA?
If this information was embossed into the neck, it’s probably the real deal. The serial number makes sense; it indicates that the guitar was made on the 72nd day of 1996, was the 14th guitar made that day. The way you read the serial number is :
YDDDYRRR
Where the Y—Y indicate the year, the DDD is the day of the year is was made, and the RRR indicate the factory/ranking. By the serial number, this should be an Acoustic Guitar made in Bozeman, Montana, and would have been the 14th guitar made that day.
If this is on an electric, then there’s an issue with the serial number and it could be a counterfeit.
If you have any doubts, you can call Gibson with the serial number and a description of the guitar and they’ll tell you if it’s a real Gibson or not.
There are a lot of fakes running around out there….
Good luck.

Should I buy a relatively low end Gibson Guitar or a high end Epiphone? The Gibson is a SG Special with 3 pickups for seven hundred and the Epiphone is also $700 but a Les Paul Black Beauty with # pickups and gold hardware.
Both are good guitars. Have you considered going used? It is pretty easy to find a beautiful, like new, Gibson Studio LP for seven hudi.
Typically when people buy high end guitars new, they treat them like a work of art. When people buy low end Guitars they treat them like dixi cups (disposable). If you were to buy a high end used guitar, and you keep it in excellent condition, you will be able to sell it the next day or many years from now for what you paid for it.
I bought (and traded) several used guitars and have not had a bad experience. Good luck!!
i want basically a Gibson Guitar with nothing in it. so i can fully customize it to my liking. im thinking unpainted fresh out of the factory. are there any sites?
I suppose that if you went through their custom shop and gave them enough money they would make you an unfinished guitar. However, they’re not going to do a production model like that for you.
You’re best bet is to buy the body and neck from someone like Warmoth Guitars. Even if you bought a factory Gibson and had it sanded down, it would be cheaper than going through the custom shop.
Good luck.
